Beyond Happiness and Misery Through Meditation

When we are happy, we experience a sense of expansion; the mind expands, And when we are miserable, we experience a certain depth. That ,is why, whether you experience happiness or sorrow in life, treat both as equal, because happiness bring expansion and sorrow brings depth, and both make you stronger. And the way to go beyond both of these is meditation.

By meditating and being in knowledge, both centeredness and expansion start to co-exist within us. And that is because this is the nature of the self.

It is said (in the Upanishad), "Anor aniyan mahato mahiyan". Which means, smaller than the smallest and bigger than the biggest, that is what I am. This feeling starts coming up within you.

How to Handle Ego?

If you find that there is ego, then let it be. Even ego belongs to the divine. Don’t try to surrender, don’t struggle. If you say that I have surrendered my ego, then it is bigger ego. It’s like saying, "I am the most humble person in this entire world!" That doesn’t show humility. Just be Natural.

The more you grow in knowledge, you see that ego goes away. You know, around the seed there is a membrane. When you soak it in water, the seed bulges, sprouts and automatically the membrane breaks away. But if you try to peel the skin, the seed itself will break. Same way, when you soak yourself in knowledge, in devotion, in love, and in wisdom, you automatically find the ego going away.

A bondage that protects you - your bondage to the Knowledge, to the Master, to the Truth, to the Self, all Save You. A rope can be tied to either protect or strangle you. The small mind and mundane things can strangle you. The big mind or knowledge saves you. Raksha Bandhan is that bondage that saves you. You are bound by your bondage to the Satsang. Your bondage to the Master, to the Truth, to the ancient Knowledge of the Rishis, and that is your saviour. Bandhan is bonding and bonding is essential in life. Let the bonding be divine in a life free from bondage.

Running Behind Happiness?

Deep rest is the essence of sadhana. You have become so tired by doing something or the other all the time. Now just sit down for some time and to be with yourself. Do some meditation. When you meditate, you will start seeing a new world in front of you. You get deep rest is meditation. You get rest when you are content, and this rest is what gives rise to Happiness.

Running behind happiness makes you tired. When you run behind happiness you get tired, but when you repose in the self, when you rest, you get energy, and that brings you strength, joy and happiness. So every once in a while, stop the rat race, and take some time out to be with yourself, and get some rest. This is what knowledge is and this is what spirituality is.

Many time, in the name of sadhana also, we start engaging ourselves in some activity, and once again we get tired. I tell you, the physical body does not make you as tired as the mind does. Work doesn’t make you as tired as much as your desires. Nothing else makes you more tired than your own desires, or greed. So what is important is for you to become content. Again and again, be content. This is an art and this is what meditation is. True sadhana is to being calm, contented, and rested.

No Time For Spiritual Practices?

I want to ask you a question. When you have to go for work, do you ever leave without brushing your teeth? Even if you have a lot of work to do, do you leave without brushing your teeth? I also had a lot of work to attend to today. I was meeting thousands of people today since morning. But do you give up drinking water because of so much work? Suppose today you know you have a lot of work in the office. Do you simply get out of bed, change into your shirt and trousers and run off to work? Do you go to the restroom or not before leaving? If you do not brush your teeth one day, no one will be able to sit near you. So it is necessary to brush your teeth every day. This is dental hygiene. In the same way, doing pranayama and meditation every day is mental hygiene.

To free the mind of all stress and to go to work with a cheerful and happy mind, you need to invest a few minutes every day for this as well. Take some time out for this. Once it comes into your routine, then it becomes a part of your day and it does not disturb your schedule anymore. No matter how urgent things may be, just have this firm determination that I will sit for 10 minutes and leave only after completing my pranayama and meditation. Once you discipline yourself this way, then that’s all that is needed. Even if you do it just once in the day, that is good enough. And if by chance you miss it one day, it is alright; do not worry too much and do it the very next day. But I am not willing to agree that one does not get time to do this.

See, everyone has only 24 hours at their disposal. One who works in a job too has only 24 hours, and even the Prime Minister has only 24 hours for himself. Both of them feel that there isn’t enough time. How much we are able to do and achieve in the time we have is a measure of our skillfulness.

Don’t get carried away by greed.

Quality Control in Yoga

Posted on: Tuesday, August 25, 2015

We need to have a quality control in yoga; anyone cannot say anything and call it yoga. All yoga teachers should do certain hours of the practice of yoga each day.

Today someone attends a yoga class for a week and then they become yoga teachers. They can’t move their body but they instruct others to move their bodies. They can’t sit still for 10 minutes, and they talk about meditation to others.

If you cannot sit still for a few minutes, how can you teach meditation? Walk the talk and talk the walk should be the slogan for a yoga teacher, and they should have a thorough training on yoga.

It is good that the Government of India has come up with quality control measures in yoga. They are designing methods and setting up standards to certify yoga teachers, and this is necessary.

If someone wants to teach yoga they should know about the nature of the mind, about the patterns of breath, about the seven layers of existence, then they can become good yoga teachers.

Emotions - To Be Expressed or Suppressed?

Posted on: Monday, August 24, 2015

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

Emotions are such that sometimes you should abstain from them, and sometimes you should express them. You can’t take extreme views here. You cannot always suppress your emotion and you cannot always keep expressing your emotion. Both will bring you difficulties and trouble.

If you always suppress your emotion you will be in trouble. If you always keep expressing your emotions, then also you will be in trouble and you will put others also in trouble. That’s why emotions should be streamlined through wisdom. When there is wisdom then you know which emotion to express and which not to express. And where you should express, and where you should not.

Suppose you are at a funeral service of somebody, then you can’t say, ‘Oh, I am so happy’, and keep jumping! People will feel like slapping you. You may be happy but you cannot express that.

Similarly, if you are sad and there is a wedding party or reception happening, you can’t go and say, ‘I am so sad’. People will not like to see you sad as they are celebrating. You will spoil the whole atmosphere.

So you have to use your discrimination - where, when, how you must express your emotions and where it is not wise to do so.

Are You Dependent or Independent?

Posted on: Sunday, August 23, 2015

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

Life is such; you should not feel that I am dependent, and I want to be independent. See, no baby has been independent. As a baby, parents took care of you, and in your old age, your children or someone else will take care of you. So, life in the beginning, and in the end, is dependency. In between, we think we are independent but there also we are dependent on many things.

If your attention is on divinity, then you will not feel the burden of dependency, or the frustration to have independence, both will disappear.

People who feel that they want to have independence, they are also frustrated. This is because wanting independence is a frustration. Come on, wake up. When you were a baby, were you not dependent? No baby thinks 'I want to go back from where I came because I am dependent on my parents', no! Whether in the form of parents, or as children, or as friends, the help you get from anywhere is coming from only one source, i.e., the divinity. It is only the divine who took care of you as your parents, and it is only the divine who will take care of you as your nurse, or neighbour, or friends, or anybody else. Someone will always come and take care of you, you don’t have to worry at all.

This whole sense of insecurity that we build in us should simply be thrown out and burned down. Don’t think your children will take care of you. Maybe during your last breath, your servant or neighbor may come and help you, who knows? Whoever is helping you, it is not that individual that is helping you, it is God helping you in that form. Leave it to the divine energy to help you when you are in need, in whatever form. So you don’t need to feel obliged or burdened by anybody’s help. Got it?

This is a big problem. We feel burdened by somebody’s help. You don’t need to feel burdened by it; that is ignorance. It is only the divine who is helping you through other people. If you have this understanding, the Advaita knowledge, then nothing can restrict your blossoming.

Guidance to Youth Who Want to Join Politics

Posted on: Saturday, August 22, 2015

First, you do your sadhana and broaden you vision.

Second, you need to have enormous patience. You go with a big vision and there are all chances that your vision is squashed and smashed and it may reach a point that you will want to throw it away. But, don’t lose heart.

You may have to face disappointments one hundred times, but the 101th time you will succeed, but for this you need to have patience and perseverance. You should hold onto your vision and your ethics.
Third, never forget your spiritual side. Whatever work you have and however busy you are, take that much needed 4-5 days for a silence program once in a year. Take 20 minutes every day to sit and listen to knowledge and meditate. This will keep your energy up.

As a politician be careful about two things:
  1. Money
  2. Sex
These are the two things with which people can create scandals about you. You have to be careful not to be maligned. It is very easy to be maligned and then you will waste all your time in proving these false allegations. Better be careful from the very beginning as these are the two areas that can create scandals against you.

In the field of politics, when you are moving ahead, there are a hundred people trying to pull you down. So as a young, enthusiastic aspirant, you have to be very clean on these areas.

Another point is, don’t make politics a profession, it should be your mission. If it is your mission, you get enormous strength, energy and enthusiasm. But if you make it a profession you will have to experience a lot of wear and tear. So, keep these points in mind.

Moving Towards Spirituality from Religion

Posted on: Friday, August 21, 2015

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

Religion has a role to play. Everyone is born into a religion. All the rituals in your life go through that religion. It has a limited role to play. Religion is not everything. You should be more spiritual.

When your movement is from religion into spirituality, that is more important. People who move from religion to spirituality, they bring dignity to their religion. When people move from religion to criminality, they bring disgrace to their religion. Today, this is what is happening around the world.

Today, people are not moving towards spirituality from religion, they are moving towards criminality. They use religion as an excuse to further their own agenda, and that has cost humanity a great deal.

When you move from religion to spirituality, you will find that everyone is yours. Otherwise religion divides people. In fact, within religions also, there are divisions. When you move to spirituality, not only do you unite within the religion, but also across religions.

Sadhana - All The Time?

Posted on: Thursday, August 20, 2015

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

You cannot, because your body cannot do it all the time. You can’t eat the whole year’s food in two days, or one month. Every day, you have to eat only a certain amount. Similarly, in sadhana also, you can’t hurry up and do a lot of sadhana, then you will be what we call a blue star (here, at The Art of Living). A blue star is someone who is not grounded; someone who is out there!

Once, in the starting years of The Art of Living, a gentleman did the Sahaj Samadhi Meditation Program. He was a brilliant person; he found the program so great, he said, "I want to be enlightened today! I will not give up until I get enlightened!"

He would sit meditating for eight hours a day. He would go sit in the Ramakrishna Ashram in Delhi to meditate. He would sit there all day, and people had to push him out when it was time to close. Suddenly, he started thinking that he was Lord Hanuman. He went to the temple there and would say, "I am Hanuman, why are they worshipping this stone?"
You can imagine what would have happened? Twelve policemen had to take him away, and he landed up in hospital.

In those days, there were no cell phones. I was in Jhansi, and I was to go to Indore for a program. When I reached Jhansi railway station, I told people that we have to go to Delhi now. As I reached Delhi, the people there were so relieved as they didn’t know how to handle this boy.
Of course, he became normal, but what I am saying is that sadhana also has to be done progressively, step by step. You can do a little more when it comes to advance courses, maybe four or five in a year, but sitting the whole day in sadhana is not possible. The growth has to come gradually. One day, suddenly, you realise, :Wow, I am so changed. Nothing disturbs me anymore. I am happy; nothing can take away my happiness". This sort of wow comes to you when you look back at yourself.

Worship of the Form and the Formless

Posted on: Tuesday, August 18, 2015

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

You have to go from the form to the formless. If you jump only to the formless, that path is full of misery.

Lord Krishna said in the Gita, that there are people who worship the formless, but that path is full of pain and sorrow. You can see this yourself. Take Moses for example, his path has been very miserable and sad. Jesus - his life was so sad. Take the example of Mohammad Paigambar, he had to undergo so much pain and struggle, and the bloodiest part of history is his. It continued after him too, all his family members had a very painful and sorrowful state.

This is the reason why Buddha said, "Buddham sharanam gachhami", i.e., I go to Buddha for refuge. Buddha is the formless in the form. Then he said, "Sangam sharanam gachhami", i.e., I surrender myself to the society and take refuge in the service of society. And then he said, "Dhammam sharanam gachhami", i.e., I take refuge in the ultimate truth.

To get away from misery, Buddha said four things; recognise there is misery. There is a reason for the misery. It is possible to get out of misery. To get out of misery, take refuge in the enlightened or Buddha. Again, Buddha is the formless in the form.

Lord Krishna said the same thing, "Aham tvam sarvapapebhyo, mokshapapebhyo mokshayishyami ma sucah". Lord Krishna very clearly said that those who worship the formless, their path is very tedious and full of misery. That is true.

Any worship is only for the formless, but the path through the form makes it joyful, easier and more perceivable for people. You may choose a path with rubble and a lot of potholes, or you may choose a nice road, a highway. This choice makes a difference.

Meditation's Impact on Anger

Posted on: Sunday, August 16, 2015

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

Go deeper into meditation. Practice more pranayama. It is impossible that your anger does not quieten down after meditation as well. And if you still feel that your anger does not subside after meditation, then you should start observing yourself very carefully.

Earlier when you used to get angry, your anger would last for a long time. If you have started meditating very recently, then you would have noticed that anger still comes, but it subsides quite soon as well. In a matter of four to five minutes your anger disappears, isn’t it so? If yes, then you should see it as a big step in the positive direction.
When you felt angry in earlier days, when you did not meditate, your anger would last for hours, days, months or perhaps even a year. But now that you have started meditating regularly, anger does not stay for long. Why is this so? It is because when anger comes, that moment the attention shifts to the breath and you remember your breath – and this helps to regulate your anger. The experience of past meditation immediately takes you back to a calm and serene state and stops the anger midway itself. Has it happened this way or not? How many of you have had this experience? (Many in the audience raise their hands).

See, others may think or say that "He has been meditating for some time now, yet he still gets angry”. But you will know from within that you have changed after meditation. There is some transformation in you. Any meditation that you do never goes waste.

Work and Rest

Whenever you do anything, just do it 100% and be totally immersed in it with all your heart and mind. And once the work is done, you must also take equally deep rest. What do we usually do? When we are resting, then too we go on thinking about what we have to do, and when we are working, we keep thinking, “Oh! There is so much work. I need to rest. I need to rest”. When you work this way, then you can neither work properly, nor are you able to take proper rest. So you lose out in both aspects.

Nature of Doubt

One thing about doubt; as human beings we always assume and we always get doubts. It is good to get doubts. As I am speaking, you are hearing, and in the mind you say, ‘No, I disagree, how can that be?' Or you say, 'Yes, I agree'. A dialogue is happening inside, and that is the intellect.

You need to understand something about the nature of doubt. Doubt is always about something that is positive; you doubt someone’s honesty, you never doubt their dishonesty.

Have you realized this? We don’t doubt dishonesty? If someone tells you, ‘I love you very much’, you ask them, ‘Really?’ But if someone says, ‘I hate you’, you never say ‘Really?’ Our doubt is always about something positive.

If someone asks you, ‘Are you happy?’ You would say, ‘Well, I don’t know.’ You doubt happiness. If someone asks, ‘Are you depressed?’ You are very sure about you depression. Even if the doctor says, ‘You are not depressed’, you will say, ‘No, no, the doctor does not know, I am depressed!’ We doubt our happiness, but we never doubt our depression.

Every Child Is a Yogi

Have you seen how children see things? When they look at you, their mind is 100 percent there. But if you look at somebody, your mind is thinking about something else. When we kindle the life force in us, we become like children again.

Every child is a yogi; every child does all the yoga asanas (postures); we have all done it as babies. If you observe a baby from the age of three months up to three years, you won’t need a yoga teacher. Anywhere, any baby, whether it is in Argentina, Mongolia, Japan, China, every child does all the yoga postures, and they breathe differently. The way a child breathes is different from the way an adult breathes; this is because a child is free from stress.

Importance of Positive Vibrations

We convey very little through words, we convey more through our vibrations, and each one of us carries a lot of vibrations. It is vibrations that make us become friends or enemies, and it is vibrations that make things happen or not!

We all want to have positive vibrations, but somehow we get caught up in the mind; we get caught up in the past. Then what happens? Our vibrations become negative and stressful. Anger, love, all these emotions are conveyed by our vibrations.

Breathing techniques, meditation, all these are aimed to make our vibrations positive.

How To Overcome The Mind

Posted on: Monday, August 10, 2015

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

What is the mind? The mind means the many desires that you carry within you. Nature knows very well the number of desires you drag and carry as a burden within you. Nature sees how tightly and feverishly you hold on to your desires, so sometimes it grants those desires and sometimes it does not. But when we remain happy and centered whether our desires get fulfilled or not, then you can say that you have killed or overcome the mind.

Suppose you are going to a cinema theatre to watch a movie and you stand in line to buy the tickets, and you get to know that the theatre is house-full. Do you feel angry or frustrated about it, or do you feel “Oh, it’s alright. Never mind”. and simply move on ahead.

You may also think that since you did not get a ticket for the cinema hall, so you might as well go to a temple for some time (laughter); or sit in a satsang for some time. When you are able to do this (skilfully), then know that you have killed and overcome your mind.

Have this unshakable faith that whatever is the best for you, that alone will happen in life. Nature will only give you that which will uplift you higher in life. Keep this deep faith.

When does this knowledge dawn in you? It happens when you give your 100% effort in whatever you do. If you simply sit idle and think that God will anyway take care of everything, then that will not do.

Usually, you do not think twice when you are about to do something wrong. But when you have to do something good or beneficial, you think “If God wants, then it will happen”. Many people tell me, “Gurudev, only when you wish or call us will we be able to come to the Ashram”.

Why do you need an invitation? Does God ever send you an invitation asking you to come meet Him? When we have to do something good, we leave it to destiny (instead of making an effort to do it). But if you want to fulfil some desire or aspiration of your own, you put in every bit of your strength to achieve that. You put your heart and soul into it. This thought process needs to be reversed.

You should know that whatever situations you are currently undergoing in life is because of your Prarabdha Karma (Karma that bears fruit in the present). And whatever you deserve, you will surely get that in life.

You must think, “What do I have to do in life?” And then you should just go ahead and do that with all sincerity, without thinking about what results you will get out of it. You should not worry about that at all. Just do whatever you have to do. Then a deep sense of contentment dawns in life.

Does Spirituality Bring about Complacency?

Posted on: Sunday, August 9, 2015

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

Absolutely not. Complacency is not spirituality in the real sense. Neither does peace mean a sense of complacency, nor can stress be a sign of creativity. If stress meant creativity, then Afghanistan should have been the most creative part of the world. Afghanistan has been under such stressful conditions since the past 25-30 years. I do not think anything creative has happened (due to the stressful conditions) in Afghanistan or Lebanon, or other troubled places in the world. The inner peace of spirituality does not support complacence. Inner peace supports dynamism. When you are happy, you only wish to do something more. When you are enthusiastic, you feel like doing something better.

How To Recognise the Guru?

Posted on: Saturday, August 8, 2015

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

This depends on that deep feeling of love and belongingness from within. You cannot ‘make’ or 'choose' someone as your Guru. You simply believe that someone is your Guru. We often say that "I have 'chosen' or ‘made’ someone my Guru". If a disciple thinks that he can ‘make’ someone his or her Guru, then that is not so.

See, whatever you make or create is always lesser or smaller as compared to what you are. You can only recognize the Guru in your life, that’s it. Now, when can you recognize that you have come to the Guru? It is when you realize that you are a traveler on the Spiritual path. When you become a traveler, it is easy to recognize the Guru.

What is Yoga?

Posted on: Thursday, August 6, 2015

Subscribe to Knowledge Sheet

We convey more through our vibrations than through our words. Our communication happens from a deeper level of our existence, and yoga is uniting with that.

You can hear a talk on love for two hours and you may not feel it. But just one glance from a baby or a puppy conveys that to you in no time. So true communication happens from a deeper level. And this communication is not just between two people or a few people. It is between us and this entire existence, and that is yoga. Yoga is not just doing some exercise. Yoga is much more. It is to bring a quality to our life. It is to expand our awareness, sharpen our intellect, and enhance our intuitive ability.

Yoga means union. Do you know that the word yoke (which essentially means to unite) comes from yoga? Yoga unites our hearts, mind, body and spirit, and it unites us with the people around us.

Perception and Expression

Life is all about perceptions – how we should see things, where we should drop our judgments, and where we should have discrimination. Second is our expression. Are we able to express ourselves correctly?

Each one of us has such wealth, beauty and goodness within us. But if we don’t express it properly, we will be misunderstood in life. This is what is happening all over the planet. We have not learned how to express ourselves, and we say others misunderstand us. We put the blame on others that no one understands us. Many girls here do that. Boys do not complain as much as girls about not being understood properly.

Today, like dressing is unisex, emotions are also unisex. Everyone gets the same feeling – even men say I am not being understood, at least by their wives or girlfriends.

So, expression is very important and here again it all boils down to that one principle – we all need to do something to cleanse our energy from negativity.

Cleansing Our Vibes

Neither at school nor at home did anyone teach us how to handle our mind, how to feel the freedom from within, how to be loving or free, and have a sense of belongingness with everybody. Nobody taught me at least – at college, or school, or university, or even at home! This is very important – we should learn how to cleanse our own vibes. We carry our vibes, and that’s how we communicate.

Suppose you go to an interview and you are tensed or angry, the interviewer will know how unstable you are, or nervous you are, or if you lack confidence. They pick that up, not from your words but from your vibes. And we are all capable of sensing vibes.

You may have observed that some people’s vibes just repel you. Tell me, would anyone here like to have vibes that repel. Not one would, right? But this happens when we carry negativity, and when we don’t know how to get it out of us. This is what we have to learn.

Then there are those who may not know so much, but they carry joyful, enthusiastic vibes along with them, and people would like to hire them! Just think for a moment, if you are an employer, what type of people would you want to work with? Someone who is ready, enthusiastic, and full of energy, or someone who is nervous, not confident, and worrying about what he mugged up or didn’t?
